The short version

Select an image in Canvas, then choose Remove background to create a cutout with the subject isolated. Your original image stays unchanged.

Remove background isolates the subject of an image and clears everything behind it, leaving a clean cutout you can place on top of any design. It is one of the Magic tools inside the Canvas editor.

Remove a background

  1. Open the image in Canvas. Open the design or image you want to edit in Canvas.
  2. Select the image. Click the image on the canvas so its tools appear in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Remove background. Pick Remove background from the toolbar. Visualist finds the subject and removes everything behind it.
  4. Keep, replace, or download. Visualist creates a new image with a transparent background. Keep it as a separate version, swap it into your design, or download it.
Good to know

Remove background creates a new image, so your original photo stays untouched in your library. The tool is powered by AI and uses credits, which are included with every plan. Results can vary, so you can run it again if the edge is not clean.
